PROGRAMMING & SERVICES
The Old School is committed to offering programming that contributes to the health and wellness of community members of all ages. In the past, we have offered information sessions and demos around diet and nutrition, managing chronic illness, and financial literacy. In March we wrapped our pilot movement therapy program, Enhance Through Dance, which was funded through the federal government’s New Horizons Program. Led by a local movement therapist who used movement-based exercises that have been shown to help with managing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, the program was well-received. The pilot was so successful that it will continue to be offered, in a slightly altered form, on Tuesday mornings.
In addition to dance therapy, The Old School regularly hosts a grief peer support group and a support group for families affected by schizophrenia, which are both offered through the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA). Watch for details on our website, Facebook page and in our monthly newsletter. Two levels of Tai Chi for arthritis (Beginner and Intermediate) are offered every Wednesday morning by a local volunteer instructor. Tai Chi is a low key, low impact exercise that benefits the body and mind.
The Old School also houses Eastern Shore Mental Health (ESMH), a network of peer mental health supporters who match community members with resources and services. ESMH also offers a weekly peer support meeting every Sunday afternoon, all are welcome.
