The Department of Opportunities and Social Development Invests in
Food Security and Community Resilience in the Musquodoboit Region

Musquodoboit and Surrounding Area, August 8th, 2025 – The Musquodoboit Area is poised for a transformative leap forward in food security, local economic development, and community collaboration thanks to a $200,000 grant to the Old School Community
Gathering Place from The Department of Opportunities and Social Development. As the lead agency, the Old School will use this landmark funding to support the creation of the Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network, an initiative designed to connect local food producers, community organizations, and residents in building a more resilient and inclusive local food system.

“Everyone deserves reliable access to healthy, affordable food – no matter where they live. This is more than just funding - it’s a commitment to locally tailored, community-led solutions that ensure everyone has access to healthy food. Initiatives like the Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network show the power of local partnerships in creating healthier, more equitable and connected communities.”

- Scott Armstrong, Minister of Opportunities and Social Development

Empowering Communities Through Collaboration
The newly established Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network (MCFN) will serve communities from Sheet Harbour to Porter’s Lake and from Lawrencetown to Dean. The project aims to bring together local farmers, small businesses, non-profit organizations, educators, and policy makers to address challenges relating to food access, affordability, and nutrition.

Key Objectives of the Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network:

  • Enhancing Food Security: Improving year-round access to nutritious, affordable, and
locally-produced food for all residents, with particular attention to vulnerable populations.

  • Supporting Local Producers: Raising awareness about local growers and building partnerships with community to address food waste.

  • Building Community Resilience: Fostering collaboration among community organizations to develop creative responses to food insecurity, supply chain disruptions, and climate challenges.

  • Education and Awareness: Offering educational programming on nutrition and food skills, empowering residents to make informed choices and participate fully in the local food system.

Grant Overview and Funding Impact:
The $200,000 grant from The Department of Opportunities and Social Development will serve as a catalyst for collective action and growth. These funds will be allocated to a variety of project components, including:

  • Establishing a physical and virtual hub for the Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network.

  • Launching a community cupboard, food education sessions, and community partner projects that seek to create greater dignity and choice around food options.

  • Developing training workshops and mentorship programs for intergenerational audiences.

  • Conducting research and outreach initiatives to better understand and address regional food security needs.

The Old School Community Gathering Place recognizes that food insecurity is a multifaceted issue, requiring comprehensive, community-based solutions. Through this grant, OSD aims to empower rural communities like Musquodoboit to chart their own paths
toward a sustainable and equitable food future.

Anticipated Outcomes and Community Benefits
The Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network is expected to yield significant and lasting benefits for the region, including:
• Greater access to nutritious food for seniors, low-income families, and Indigenous communities.
• Stronger ties among local organizations, businesses, and residents.
• Heightened awareness of healthy eating and sustainable food practices.
• Resilience in the face of economic and climate-related disruptions.

Over the 12 months, the MCFN will monitor and report on its progress, ensuring that the network remains responsive to community needs and accountable to its partners and funders.

A Model for Rural Innovation
The creation of the Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network demonstrates the power of rural communities to lead innovative, grassroots change. By investing in local capacity and prioritizing collaboration, this initiative sets a precedent for similar regions across Canada looking to rethink their approach to food security and community wellness.

The Musquodoboit Collaborative Food Network invites everyone in the region to get involved— by volunteering in community gardens, participating in MCFN events, or joining in educational programs. Updates, event listings, and resources will be available through the Old School’s website and social media channels.
